Best Online Summer Programs for High School Students in English and Writing
Iowa Young Writers’ Studio Online
The IYWS Online program gives high school students a valuable opportunity to enhance their creative writing skills in a structured and supportive virtual environment. This six-week asynchronous course is available twice per year: in the winter (mid-January to late February) and in the summer (late June to early August).

Students participate in creative writing classes and collaborate in theater workshops, led by accomplished writers, poets, and performance artists. The program is offered both virtually and on-campus, with the on-campus format operating as a day camp (no overnight accommodations).
The program is available to high school students in grades 9–12, with each class capped at 18 participants to ensure personalized attention. Participants must be at least 14 years old. Every workshop is guided by two teaching artists, fostering collaboration and creative growth.
A standout feature is the Writer’s Theatre, where students explore the intersection of writing and theater through improvisation, group projects, and games.
